The New York Mets got a strong performance from pitcher Dwight Gooden, who stymied the Washington offense en route to a win, 3-2, at Citi Field. Skip Lockwood earned the save for New York, his 1st. The win puts New York at 2-0.

Lenny Dykstra drew 2 walks for New York. The 30-year old center fielder had a key at-bat in the bottom of the seventh. With two out and the bases loaded, he broke a 2-2 tie with a run-scoring walk off John Wetteland. It was his 3rd walk of the season.
