Starting pitcher Andy Messersmith had a solid game. He was a big reason the Los Angeles Angels throttled the New York Yankees, 5-1. New York now has a record of 13-11.

It could have been a different outcome for Los Angeles, had it not been for Brian Downing, the 28-year old catcher . Downing contributed a 2-run single in the top of the first inning to put Los Angeles up, 4-0.

"The bar for us is not a particular opponent, it's ourselves," said Los Angeles manager .
