Late Rally by Padres Locks Up 2-1 Win
|
In a low-scoring tilt between the San Diego Padres and the Washington Nationals, 23-year old right-handed pitcher Andy Benes was the difference-maker. The San Diego right-hander spearheaded the 2-1 win. San Diego reliever Craig Lefferts was the winner. His record is now 2-0. Stephen Strasburg took the loss. Trevor Hoffman closed out the game, earning his 5th save.
San Diego used the timely hitting of Ryan Klesko to seize the win. The pinch hitter stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the ninth inning to put the Padres on top, 2-1. It was his only hit in 1 at-bat, but it was a game-changer.
"We squandered some opportunities," said Washington manager .
Washington, now 4-19, continues its dreadful start.
