Cincinnati and Chicago played a hard-fought contest.
Johnny Vander Meer never let the Cubs get in a groove. The left-hander used his bread and butter, his fastball, to pitch the Reds to a win, 3-1. Rob Dibble earned the save, his 3rd, for the Reds.
Who knows how it might've ended, had it not been for Aaron Boone? The Cincinnati third baseman had a run-scoring double in the top of the fifth inning to put the Reds on top, 1-0. For the game, Boone had 1 double and 1 single in 4 at-bats.
"Tough loss," said Chicago manager . "But that's how the cookie crumbles."
Cincinnati is now 7-10.
