Tropicana Field was the site for American League action featuring the Tampa Bay Rays and New York Yankees.

The New York Yankees defeated the Tampa Bay Rays, 11-5, at Tropicana Field. Leading the charge for New York was center fielder Mickey Mantle. He went 4-5 with 2 home runs and 2 doubles, while scoring 4 and driving in 5. Whitey Ford picked up the save, his 1st.

With New York leading 5-0 in the top of the third, Mantle batted against Tampa Bay pitcher Scott Kazmir. Mantle hit a fastball to right for a grand slam home run. His 6th home run of the season put the Yankees on top, 9-0.

"What's not to like about a win?" said Mantle.

With the loss, Tampa Bay sinks to 9-9.
