The Pittsburgh Pirates topped the Cincinnati Reds, 8-4, at Great American Ball Park. Pittsburgh right fielder Dave Parker was a spark plug for the offense. He was 2-3 with a home run, a double, and a walk, while scoring 2 times and driving in 2. With the win, the Pirates improved to 90-71.

Pittsburgh used a well-timed hit by Bill Madlock to capture the win. The third baseman socked a 2-run double in the top of the second inning to put the Pirates ahead, 2-0. Though it was his only hit in 4 at-bats, it was important.

Madlock said afterward that he was glad to help his team win.
