Red Sox Beaten by Yankees, 5-1
|
New York pitcher Red Ruffing did his part in helping his team defeat the Boston Red Sox, 5-1. The opposition could never get too much going against the right-hander. Ruffing picked up the win for New York, going 7.1 innings. He gave up 1 run on 5 hits. He now sports a record of 15-6. Rich Gossage got the save, his 3rd in 9 chances.
Babe Ruth dealt the Red Sox a blow in the top of the sixth. Batting with the bases loaded and New York leading 1-0, Ruth, who is tied for 5th in the AL in home runs with 36, hit a 2-2 fastball for a run-scoring single.
"It's about putting our team in the best position to win ballgames," said Ruffing.
The first-place Yankees bumped their record to 102-58.
