The Chicago White Sox picked up a win at Tropicana Field, knocking off the Tampa Bay Rays, 5-2. Starting pitcher Red Faber played a key role in the triumph. Hoyt Wilhelm recorded the save. In save chances, he's now 36 for 42. After today's action, Chicago sits at 74-79, while Tampa Bay falls to 68-86.
George Davis was 1-3 for Chicago. With one out and the game tied in the top of the eighth inning, Davis, who is tied for 7th in the AL in triples with 12, had a clutch at-bat. Facing Tampa Bay hurler J P Howell, he hit a sacrifice fly to give the White Sox a 3-2 lead.
"Winning is the only objective," said Davis after the game.
