Milwaukee got a terrific performance from pitcher Mike Caldwell, but it wasn't enough to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates. Pittsburgh won the PNC Park contest, 4-3. Caldwell threw 7.2 innings of 6-hit ball for the losing team. Pittsburgh pitcher Kent Tekulve earned the win, hiking his record to 4-3. Dan Plesac suffered the loss. The Pirates bumped their record to 85-68 with this win.

Phil Garner was the walk-off hero for Pittsburgh. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Pirates second baseman hit a dramatic run-scoring single to send the teams home.

"Coulda, shoulda, woulda," said Milwaukee manager . "We had our chances and didn't cash in."
