Padres Peel Off 5-3 Win

The San Diego Padres picked up a win at Petco Park, topping the Philadelphia Phillies, 5-3. On the mound for San Diego was right-hander Andy Benes. He played a principal role in the triumph. Benes got the win, improving to 15-5. He gave up 7 hits and walked 2 over 6 innings. He allowed 2 runs. The defeat makes Philadelphia 84-69.
The Phillies had been locked in a 2-2 tie with the Padres going into the bottom of the fifth inning. That changed quickly when the 33-year old second baseman Mark Loretta came to the plate. Loretta hit a 2-run home run on a first pitch fastball from Philadelphia hurler Aaron Nola. It was Loretta's 2nd home run of the year.
Benes told a San Diego Daily News reporter he was "pleased as punch" with the win.
