Fernando Valenzuela pitched a dandy of a game to help the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Chicago Cubs, 4-1. Eric Gagne earned his 11th save in 15 tries. The second-place Dodgers have a record of 78-75.

Bill Russell had a direct impact on the outcome. Russell contributed a 2-run single in the top of the fourth inning to put Los Angeles up, 3-1.
