The Tampa Bay Rays beat the New York Yankees, 5-4. Tampa Bay pitcher and Burbank, California, native James Shields led the way. The Rays improved their record to 68-85 by beating New York.
Up to bat in the bottom of the tenth, 27-year old center fielder Kevin Kiermaier had a chance to be the hero. New York pitcher Mariano Rivera wanted to foil that plan. But with one out, Kiermaier hit a sacrifice fly. The Rays had themselves a thrilling win.
"Feels good to be on the winning side," said Shields.
