Red Sox Stick Pirates with 7-4 Loss
|
The Boston Red Sox beat the Pittsburgh Pirates, 7-4, at PNC Park. Boston shortstop Xander Bogaerts had an outstanding performance. He went 3-4 with 2 doubles. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. Roger Clemens, the winner, improved to 11-14. He held Pittsburgh to 3 runs on 6 hits over 5 innings, while racking up 6 strikeouts. Jonathan Papelbon collected save number 36.
Boston used the timely hitting of Carl Yastrzemski to capture the win. The left fielder socked a 2-run home run in the top of the sixth inning to put the Red Sox ahead, 5-3. It was his only hit in 5 at-bats, but it was a big one.
"We'll relax tonight and get back after it tomorrow," Yastrzemski said after the game.
The win elevated the Red Sox to 80-71.
