The Kansas City Royals rode a solid performance from 25-year-old starting pitcher Kevin Appier to a win, beating the Boston Red Sox, 4-2, at Kauffman Stadium. Jeff Montgomery earned the save for Kansas City, his 43rd. The first-place Royals hiked their record to 78-69.

Kansas City took a 3-2 lead on Johnny Damon's 7th home run of the season. The solo home run, which Damon hit in the bottom of the eighth, left Boston pitcher Smoky Joe Wood shaking his head.

"I'm just happy to help the team win," Damon told the Kansas City Today.
