The Cardinals grabbed a win, 4-3, at Great American Ball Park, overcoming a fine effort from Cincinnati pitcher Jose Rijo. Rijo went 8 innings and allowed 3 runs. St. Louis reliever Bruce Sutter was the winner. His record is now 5-0. Rob Dibble took the loss. St. Louis is now 72-75, Cincinnati 72-75.

St. Louis used a timely hit from Joe Torre to get the win. The catcher stroked a run-scoring double in the top of the ninth inning to put the Cardinals ahead, 4-3. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it made an impact.

Torre attributed the win to "everyone pulling their weight."
