Cardinals Lose Contest, 5-3
|
St. Louis third baseman Ken Boyer had a terrific game, but it still wasn't enough to get his team a win. Boyer went 2 for 2 with a home run, a triple, and a walk. He drove in 3 runs and scored once, even as Cincinnati beat the Cardinals, 5-3. Johnny Vander Meer got the win, improving to 12-13. He pitched 8 innings, giving up 4 hits and 3 runs, while striking out 3 and walking 3. Rob Dibble wrapped it up, recording his 28th save.
Johnny Bench had a big 2-run home run for the Reds in the bottom of the fourth inning. With Cincinnati leading 2-0 and a runner on 2nd, he sized up a fastball from Bob Gibson, who is tied for 8th in the NL in strikeouts with 172, and punished it. The result was his 16th home run of the season, which put the Reds on top, 4-0.
"I just tried to make good contact," said Bench.
Cincinnati is now 72-74, St. Louis 71-75.
