The Boston Red Sox got a marvelous performance from pitcher Smoky Joe Wood. The right-hander kept the Toronto offense from ever getting much traction. The result was an impressive 3-2 Boston victory at Fenway Park. After today's action, Boston sits at 75-68; Toronto slips to 75-67.

Boston got a clutch hit from Nomar Garciaparra. The designated hitter socked a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to win the game. It was his only hit in 1 at-bat, but it was game-ender.

Garciaparra told reporters after the game: "Runs were at a premium, so a good win for us."
