The Detroit Tigers withstood an impressive performance by San Francisco center fielder Willie Mays to defeat the Giants, 9-5, at Comerica Tigers Park. Mays was 3 for 5 with a home run and 2 doubles, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 2. Detroit reliever Joel Zumaya got the win, raising his record to 1-0. Gary Lavelle was tagged with the loss. Detroit sits in 4th place in the American League Central Division at 69-74.

Detroit took the lead, 7-5, on Norm Cash's 2nd home run of the season. The 2-run home run came off San Francisco pitcher Sergio Romo in the bottom of the eighth.
