The New York Yankees got a brilliant start from 28-year old left-handed pitcher Ron Guidry, who shut out the Kansas City Royals, 1-0. Guidry, now 17-6, was the winner. In 9 innings, he gave up 2 hits, while striking out 9, walking 0, and allowing no runs. With the win, New York goes to 88-53, while the Royals fall to 76-65.

The game-ending blow was delivered by Joe DiMaggio in the bottom of the ninth. That's when he hit a run-scoring double off 36-year old right-handed pitcher Kyle Farnsworth to win it for New York and cause the home crowd to erupt in celebration.

"I always intend to finish what I've started," said Guidry.
