Nationals Scratch and Claw to 7-4 Win
The Washington Nationals overcame a good performance by Seattle center fielder Ken Griffey Jr to knock off Seattle, 7-4, in 15 innings at Safeco Field. Griffey Jr hit 2 home runs. He drove in 4 runs and scored twice. Washington reliever Jeff Fassero picked up the win, upping his record to 1-0. George Sherrill was saddled with the loss. Chad Cordero closed it out for Washington, earning his 1st save.

Spike Owen, the Washington shortstop, contributed a 2-run single in the top of the 15th inning to make the score 7-4, Nationals. For the game, Owen went 2 for 7 with 2 singles, while adding 2 RBI.

After the game, Owen applauded his team's resolve. "We kept our focus on the task before us," he said.

At 56-78, Washington is in last place in the National League Eastern Division.
