Fans watched the New York Yankees and the Detroit Tigers fight to the finish.

The New York Yankees faced a tough opponent in Detroit pitcher Denny McLain, but did just enough to pull out the victory at Comerica Tigers Park by a final score of 6-5. McLain went 6 innings and allowed 1 run. Mariano Rivera was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 38 of 44 save opportunities.

Timely hitting helped the Yankees beat the Tigers. Prime example: the two-out single Mickey Mantle registered in the top of the ninth. Facing Willie Hernandez, Mantle gave his team the lead, 6-5, when he hit a 2-run single.

"At the end of the day, wins and losses are really the only thing that matters," said Mantle.

The first-place Yankees improved to 82-51.
