Starting pitcher Randy D Johnson took care of business, helping the Seattle Mariners stifle the Texas Rangers, 4-2. The winner was Johnson. He threw 8.0 innings of 5-hit ball. The loser was Nolan Ryan. Kazuhiro Sasaki wrapped it up, recording his 28th save.

The Rangers had been locked in a 2-2 tie with the Mariners going into the bottom of the sixth inning. That changed quickly when the 21-year old center fielder Julio Rodriguez came to the plate. Rodriguez hit a solo home run on a 1-1 fastball from Texas hurler Nolan Ryan. It was Rodriguez's 18th home run of the year.

"Really good pitchers have that ability to raise their game when they need to," said Seattle manager .

Seattle is now 75-57, Texas 56-76.
