The San Diego Padres picked up a win at Petco Park, knocking off the Milwaukee Brewers, 3-1. Starting pitcher Ed Whitson played a key role in the triumph. Whitson got the win, improving to 9-10. He gave up 7 hits and walked 1 over 6.1 innings. He allowed 1 run. Trevor Hoffman got the save, the 25th for him this season.
Brian S Giles hit a run-scoring triple off Cal Eldred in the bottom of the second, which put the Padres in front, 1-0. Giles had 1 single, in addition to the triple. For the game, he went 2 for 3.
"Winning the game is always the first objective," Whitson said.
The Padres now own a record of 78-53.
