David Cone, who is tied for 10th in the NL in wins with 13, had a strong outing for the New York Mets against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium. The right-hander was a big part of his team's 2-1 win. In 7.2 innings, Cone surrendered 6 hits, while striking out 5 and walking 1. He allowed 1 run. John Franco earned save number 12.
Had Cleon Jones not delivered a key base hit in the top of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and a runner on 2nd, Jones hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 2-1, in favor of the Mets.
"We had the right guys up at the right times," said Los Angeles manager . "We just didn't cash in."
New York is 71-58 and Los Angeles, with the loss, 62-68.
