The Tampa Bay Rays got a strong performance from pitcher James Shields, who stymied the Toronto offense en route to a win, 3-2, at Rogers Centre. Picking up the save was Grant Balfour, his 25th. The 4th-place Rays hiked their record to 58-70.
Tampa Bay used a well-timed hit by Dave Martinez to capture the win. The right fielder socked a run-scoring double in the top of the fourth inning to put the Rays ahead, 2-1. Though it was his only hit in 4 at-bats, it was important.
"We put some tough at-bats on some tough pitches," said Tampa Bay manager .
