Randy Jones, who is tied for 6th in the NL in complete games with 4, propelled his team to victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. The final score was 3-2, San Diego. In 7 innings, Jones surrendered 7 hits, while striking out 6 and walking 1. He allowed 2 runs. The Padres lead the National League Western Division by 8½ games.
San Diego used a well-timed hit by Tony Gwynn Sr to capture the win. The left fielder socked a run-scoring double in the top of the sixth inning to put the Padres ahead, 2-1. Though it was his only hit in 4 at-bats, it was important.
