The home crowd came to cheer on their first-place New York Yankees.

New York pitcher Stan Bahnsen had a large part in his team beating the Houston Astros, 6-1. The right-hander kept opposing batters in check throughout the game. The third-place Astros dropped to 62-65.

In the bottom of the third, 24-year old first baseman Lou Gehrig hit a run-scoring double. The 27th double of the season for the New York first baseman put the Yankees on top, 1-0.
