The San Diego Padres stopped the St. Louis Cardinals, 7-5, at Busch Stadium. The Padres got a big game from Manny Machado, who hit 2 home runs. He scored 3 times and drove in 3. Jake Peavy got the win, improving to 8-7. He pitched 6.2 innings, giving up 6 hits and 1 run, while striking out 7 and walking 1.

Machado contributed a big hit, a 2-run home run, for San Diego in the top of the fifth. With his team trailing 1-0, Machado took a fastball from Mort Cooper and stroked the home run to right. His 17th home run of the season allowed the Padres to leap in front, 2-1.

"Every win gets us closer to our ultimate goal," said Machado.

The Padres now have a record of 73-50 with the win over St. Louis.
