The Boston Red Sox polished off the Houston Astros by the score of 6-1. The largest share of the credit belonged to catcher Jason Varitek. Varitek was 2-4 with a home run. He drove in 4 runs and scored once for the Red Sox. Cy Young was the winner. He's now 10-13. The loser was 37-year old right-handed pitcher Joe Niekro. Boston shortstop Xander Bogaerts said the only thing on his mind when he came to bat with a runner on 1st in the bottom of the sixth was making good contact. He did that much, and more! Bogaerts hit a 2-run home run to stake Boston to a 3-1 lead. His 20th home run of the season came off Houston pitcher Joe Niekro.

"Our approach was just to try to see something over the plate and be aggressive," Varitek told the Boston Times.
