Hurler Dizzy Dean gave the St. Louis Cardinals a solid start. The native of Lucas, Texas helped his team defeat the San Diego Padres, 3-2, at Busch Stadium. Al Hrabosky, summoned from the bullpen, notched his 23rd save. St. Louis is 61-62 and San Diego, with the loss, 72-50.
Had Ozzie Smith not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 2nd and 3rd, Smith hit a 2-run single. That made the score 3-2, in favor of the Cardinals.
In his postgame comments, Cardinals manager heaped praise on Dean. "For a young player, he's done a lot of good things for us."
