San Francisco Giants starter Christy Mathewson pitched well against the Philadelphia Phillies at AT&T Park, leading his team to a win, 6-3. Mathewson, now 11-8, was the winner. In 8 innings, he gave up 4 hits, while striking out 3, walking 1, and allowing 3 runs. Brian Wilson, who is tied for 5th in the NL in holds with 13, earned the save for San Francisco.
San Francisco right fielder Mel Ott landed a blow when he belted a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth. It was his 20th home run of the season. With it, the Giants took a 2-0 lead.
"I liked his command," said San Francisco manager . "Christy was throwing strikes."
The third-place Phillies dropped to 66-56.
