New York got a strong outing from Tom Seaver as the Mets defeated the Chicago Cubs, 4-1, at Citi Field. John Franco earned his 11th save in 12 tries. At 69-54, the Mets have a slim two-game lead in the National League Eastern Division.

The Cubs had been locked in a 1-1 tie with the Mets going into the bottom of the sixth inning. That changed quickly when the 25-year old first baseman Keith Hernandez came to the plate. Hernandez hit a run-scoring double on a first pitch changeup from Chicago hurler Clark Griffith. It was Hernandez's 9th double of the year.

Hernandez called the win "an overall solid one."
