Chicago Cubs starter Clark Griffith was in fine form. He led his team to victory over the St. Louis Cardinals, 3-1. Griffith picked up the win for Chicago, going 8 innings. He gave up 1 run on 6 hits. He now sports a record of 1-0. Sean Marshall earned the save for Chicago, his 1st.
The Cubs got a big at-bat from left fielder Billy Williams. For the game, Williams went 1-3 with a home run and was hit by a pitch. In the top of the first, with the bases empty, he stroked a solo home run. His 2nd home run of the season gave Chicago a 1-0 lead.
"That's how you're going to be successful," said Cubs manager . "It starts with pitching and it will always be pitching."
The loss drops St. Louis to 6-5.
