The Minnesota Twins beat the Kansas City Royals, 4-3, at Kauffman Stadium. Tony Oliva, in particular, was impressive. He was 3-3 with a home run, 2 doubles, and a walk. Minnesota occupies last place in the American League Central Division at 46-61.

The Royals had been locked in a 2-2 tie with the Twins going into the top of the fifth inning. That changed quickly when the 23-year old catcher Joe Mauer came to the plate. Mauer hit a solo home run on a 2-1 slider from Kansas City hurler Bret Saberhagen. It was Mauer's 13th home run of the year.

Mauer told a Minnesota Bulletin reporter that he was "gratified" with the win.
