Phillies Get Clonked by Mets, 5-4
|
The New York Mets withstood an impressive performance by Philadelphia first baseman John Kruk to defeat the Phillies, 5-4, at Citi Field. Kruk was 2-4 with 2 home runs. John Franco earned the save for New York, his 7th. With the win, New York upped its record to 58-49.
The Mets got a big at-bat from right fielder Darryl Strawberry. For the game, Strawberry went 2-4 with a double, while adding 3 RBI. In the bottom of the fifth, with the bases loaded, he stroked a bases-clearing double. His 15th double of the season gave New York a 4-2 lead.
New York manager commended his team for exhibiting "no shortage of effort."
