Giants Clipped, 4-1
|
The San Francisco Giants could not turn a fine performance from pitcher Christy Mathewson into a win. Instead, the Pittsburgh Pirates prevailed, 4-1. Mathewson threw 6.2 innings of 5-hit ball. Deacon Phillippe snagged the win in relief. The right-hander allowed no runs on 2 hits over 2 innings. He's now 5-6 on the season. The save went to Joel Hanrahan, number 28 for him.
Dave Parker dealt the Giants a blow in the top of the ninth. Batting with the bases loaded and Pittsburgh leading 2-1, Parker, who is tied for 8th in the NL with a .489 slugging percentage, hit a first pitch fastball for a 2-run single.
"I thought we played a nice game," Parker told the Pittsburgh Herald. "Good pitching, timely hitting, it was all there."
With the win, the Pirates have a record of 60-45.
