The New York Mets defeated the Milwaukee Brewers, 8-5, in National League action at Miller Park. New York pitcher David Cone had a standout performance. John Franco wrapped it up, recording his 5th save. New York is now 56-48, Milwaukee 59-46.

New York used a timely hit from Jeff Kent to get the win. The pinch hitter stroked a run-scoring double in the top of the seventh inning to put the Mets ahead, 5-4. It might've been his only hit, but it did the trick.

"Scoring runs is scoring runs," said New York skipper . "It's important to have different ways to do it."
