Sammy Sosa was a vital contributor to the 5-4 Chicago victory over San Diego. The Cubs right fielder went 2 for 4 with a home run, while scoring 2 times and driving in 3. Rick Sutcliffe got the win, improving to 9-9. He pitched 7 innings, giving up 8 hits and 4 runs, while striking out 8 and walking 1. Sean Marshall recorded the save. In save chances, he's now 22 for 25.
With Chicago leading 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth, Sosa batted against San Diego pitcher Randy Jones. Sosa hit a fastball to left for a 2-run home run. His 15th home run of the season put the Cubs on top, 5-2.
"We had some nice at-bats at the right time," said Cubs manager .
The 4th-place Cubs go to 51-50.
