The San Francisco Giants wanted a good start from Christy Mathewson -- and he delivered one. The result was a 6-1 San Francisco win over the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. Mathewson, who leads the NL in innings pitched with 164.0, went the distance for San Francisco. He gave up 1 run on 7 hits. The second-place Giants are 57-45.

San Francisco went up, 5-1, on Freddie Lindstrom's 12th home run of the season. The 2-run home run, which Lindstrom hit in the top of the seventh, left Philadelphia pitcher Pete Alexander stewing.

"The more wins we pile up," said Lindstrom, "the more I like our chances."
