Late Rally Gets Giants 6-3 Win
|
The San Francisco Giants defeated the Miami Marlins, 6-3, in 10 innings. Willie Mays led the way, going 1-for-3 for San Francisco. The winner in relief was Brian Wilson. The right-hander allowed no runs on 1 hit in 1.1 innings. He now owns a record of 2-3. Rod Beck earned the save, his 24th, for the Giants.
The game was at a stalemate until left fielder Monte Irvin came to bat in the top of the tenth. Facing Miami pitcher Chris Hammond, he hit a 2-2 fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting San Francisco on top, 4-3.
"Our team showed some spunk," said Mays.
San Francisco is now 55-44, Miami 41-57.
