The New York Yankees faced a tough opponent in Baltimore pitcher Dave McNally, but did just enough to pull out the victory at Oriole Park at Camden Yards by a final score of 6-5. McNally went 7 innings and allowed 2 runs. Sparky Lyle picked up the win in relief, improving his record to 5-2. Tippy Martinez was tagged with the loss. Mariano Rivera was credited with the save for New York, his 28th of the season.

The game was at a stalemate until first baseman Lou Gehrig came to bat in the top of the ninth. Facing Baltimore pitcher B J Ryan, he hit a 1-2 changeup for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting New York on top, 6-5.

"Losing is easy," said Gehrig. "Winning is hard."

New York is first in the American League Eastern Division with a record of 57-37.
