Getting an impressive start from Tim Hudson, Oakland beat San Francisco by the score of 4-2. The winner was Hudson. He threw 7.1 innings of 5-hit ball. The loser was Joe McGinnity. Dennis Eckersley, who is tied for 2nd in the AL in saves with 26, earned the save for Oakland.
Willie McCovey could have done more damage. In the bottom of the ninth, with San Francisco trailing 4-1, San Francisco had runners on 2nd and 3rd. That's when McCovey hit a sacrifice fly. But it was not enough. Oakland would go on to win the game.
The Athletics lead the American League Western Division by a game.
