The Chicago Cubs beat the Cincinnati Reds, 7-6, in 10 innings. Chicago pitcher and Independence, Missouri, native Rick Sutcliffe led the way. Chicago reliever Sean Marshall picked up the win, upping his record to 4-1. Rob Dibble absorbed the loss. Randy Myers locked down his 5th save.

Chicago used a timely hit from Riggs Stephenson to get the win. The pinch hitter stroked a 2-run double in the top of the tenth inning to put the Cubs ahead, 7-5. It was his only hit in 1 at-bat, but it made an impact.

"We battled our tails off to get this win," said Chicago manager .

The win makes Chicago 45-46.
