Yankees Handle Indians, 5-1
|
New York got a strong outing from Ron Guidry as the Yankees defeated the Cleveland Indians, 5-1, at Progressive Field. In 6.1 innings, Guidry surrendered 6 hits, while striking out 2 and walking 2. He allowed 1 run. The first-place Yankees, at 54-36, lead the American League Eastern Division by 3½ games.
New York used a well-timed hit by Frankie Crosetti to capture the win. The shortstop socked a run-scoring double in the top of the fourth inning to put the Yankees ahead, 2-0. Though it was his only hit in 3 at-bats, it was important.
Said Cleveland manager : "We weren't able to do much."
