Behind an impressive start by Tim Lincecum, San Francisco beat Oakland, 2-1. San Francisco reliever Brian Wilson picked up the win. Chief Bender, who is tied for 10th in the AL in quality starts with 13, took the loss for Oakland. Rod Beck earned the save, his 22nd.
San Francisco used a timely hit from Mel Ott to get the win. The right fielder stroked a run-scoring double in the top of the ninth inning to put the Giants ahead, 2-1. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a difference-maker.
"Tough loss," said Oakland manager . "This one will stick in my craw."
San Francisco is in second place in the National League Western Division with a record of 52-39.
