Fans were not deterred by the threat of rain. They came to see their hometown New York Mets take on the Texas Rangers.

The New York Mets got a magnificent effort from pitcher Dwight Gooden, who kept Texas hitters in check en route to a 3-0 Mets win at Citi Field. Skip Lockwood earned the save, his 22nd.

Gooden worked his mojo for New York. The hard-throwing right-hander allowed no runs on 3 hits over 7.1 innings of work.

"Dwight was pretty good at keeping their guys off-balance," said New York manager .

The second-place Mets improved to 49-38.
