Pirates Trip Phillies, 7-6
|
Richie Ashburn had a good game, but he could not keep the Philadelphia Phillies from falling, 7-6, to the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park. The Philadelphia right fielder was 2-3 with a double and 2 walks. He scored 2 times in the loss. Pittsburgh reliever Bill Landrum picked up the win, upping his record to 2-0. Steve Carlton took the loss. Deacon Phillippe finished to wrap up his 7th save.
Pittsburgh went in front, 7-6, on Honus Wagner's 5th home run of the season. The 2-run home run, which Wagner hit in the bottom of the eighth, left Philadelphia pitcher Steve Carlton visibly perturbed.
"I always try to stay as positive and as mentally strong as possible because I know how crazy this game can be," said Wagner.
Pittsburgh raised its record to 49-38 with the win.
