The inspired effort of Boston second baseman Bill R Mueller was not enough to prevent a loss, 8-5, to the Chicago Cubs. Mueller went 1 for 4 with a home run, while adding 4 RBI and scoring once. Hippo Vaughn picked up the win with 5.2 innings of work. He allowed 5 runs on 10 hits, while walking 0 and striking out 2. On the season, he is now 5-10. Randy Myers sewed up the save, his 4th.

In the top of the sixth, Chicago center fielder Hack Wilson had a run-producing at-bat. Facing Boston hurler Smoky Joe Wood, Wilson drew a walk, driving in 1 run. That made the score 4-1, Chicago. For the day, Wilson was 1 for 4 with a double and a walk.

"We're stringing together some nice wins," said Chicago manager .

The third-place Red Sox dropped to 42-41.
