Houston got a valiant performance from pitcher J R Richard, but it wasn't enough to beat the Detroit Tigers. Detroit won the game, 3-2. Richard threw 8.0 innings of shutout ball for the losing team. Todd Jones picked up the win in relief. His record improves to 2-0. Larry Andersen suffered the loss. Willie Hernandez collected his 18th save.

Detroit needed the clutch hitting of Darrell Evans to seal the deal. The third baseman swatted a 3-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to put the Tigers on top, 3-2. For the game, Evans had 1 home run and 1 single in 3 at-bats.

"You have to win 1-0, 3-2, 2-1 games if you want to get to where you want to go," said Tigers manager .

The Tigers improved their record to 40-40 with the win over Houston.
