Giants Take Tight Tilt, 2-1
|
San Francisco Giants starter Christy Mathewson pitched his team past the Cincinnati Reds, 2-1. The winning pitcher was Mathewson, now 8-3. He tossed 8 innings of 4-hit ball, while walking 4 and fanning 6. Rod Beck was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 20 of 23 save opportunities.
In the bottom of the third, slick-fielding center fielder Willie Mays hit a 2-run home run. The 10th home run of the season for the San Francisco center fielder put the Giants on top, 2-0.
"We had the right guys up at the right times," said Cincinnati manager . "We just didn't cash in."
With the win, San Francisco upped its record to 47-33.
